Frequently Asked Questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the US, 15% is standard for average service, 18-20% for good service, and 20-25% or more for exceptional service. Counter service and takeout typically receive 10-15%. This calculator shows the exact dollar amount at any tip percentage.
How much should I tip for food delivery?
A 15-20% tip is recommended for food delivery, with a minimum of $3-5 for small orders. Tip more for large orders, long distances, or bad weather. Delivery drivers rely heavily on tips as part of their income.
How do regional presets work?
Regional presets are static defaults for common tipping norms and quick-tip buttons. They speed up entry, but you can still manually set any tip percentage and mode values.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is standard and slightly more economical, since you are tipping on the food and service rather than the tax. Many people tip on the post-tax total for simplicity. Dining mode lets you choose the tip base — subtotal, post-tax, or a custom amount — so the percentage is applied exactly how you prefer.
How do I split a tip unevenly, like for tip pooling among staff?
Switch to Split mode and choose "Weighted" instead of "Equal." Enter a share for each person — a driver and a packer might split 2:1, or a server and a busser might split 3:1 — and the calculator divides the tip in that proportion instead of evenly. This also works for catering or event staff who each get a different cut of a pooled tip.
