Understanding Tipping Etiquette

Why tipping norms vary so much

Tipping culture depends on whether service staff rely on gratuity to reach a living wage and whether a service charge is already built into the bill. In the US and Canada, tips make up a large part of server pay, so 15-20% is standard. In much of Europe, Asia, and the Gulf, a service charge is often already included, so an extra tip is smaller or optional.
