Privacy Policy

Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains what CalcTrail collects, how it is used and protected, where it is kept, and what you can change.

CalcTrail is operated by Dilip Borad from India, who decides why and how the personal data described below is handled and is the point of contact for it. Questions about your data, and complaints about the way it has been handled, go to privacy@calctrail.com. Dilip Borad is the Grievance Officer for CalcTrail, and answers a complaint within 30 days.

Quick Summary

  • Guest data stays in your browser: your workspaces, history, variables, and settings are not sent to our servers unless you sign in. Creating an expiring share link sends that one snapshot to us so the link can work; a link that carries the calculation in its own address sends us nothing.
  • Account & Usage Data: We collect account details (if you sign in) and usage data to run the service.
  • Search Queries: your recent searches are kept in this browser so search can offer them again. They are not sent to our servers, whether or not you are signed in.
  • Analytics: one cookieless tool, Ahrefs Web Analytics, counts page views and a fixed list of feature events for every visitor, except a visit that starts from a share link. It sets no cookies, keeps no persistent identifier, and never sees your inputs, results, or search text. You can switch it off in Settings → Analytics.
  • Data Storage: Logged-in data is stored in our database with encryption in transit and at rest. Each device you sign in on also keeps a local copy so the app loads without waiting for the network; it is deleted when you sign out.
  • Your Control: In Settings you can export your data, reset it, delete your account, switch analytics off, and switch search-query storage off.

Information We Collect

  • Account Information: If you create an account, we collect your email address and the name you enter. Signing up with email also stores your password, only as a one-way hash that cannot be turned back into the password. Signing in with Google gives us the name, email address and profile picture on your Google account.
  • Date of birth: Settings → Profile no longer asks for one. The dates entered before September 2026 have been deleted.
  • Usage Data: If you are signed in, your calculations, workspaces, variables, and preferences are stored in your account so they sync across your devices. As a guest, none of this reaches us unless you create an expiring share link — it stays in your browser.
  • Expiring share links you create: a snapshot of that one calculation (the entries and settings in the tab, and its title), when the link expires, and how many times it has been viewed. For a link created without an account we also store the IP address it was created from, so misuse of sharing can be investigated. The other kind of share link, which carries the calculation in its own address, stores nothing with us: the values are in the link itself, so anyone who has the link can read them.
  • Search Queries: Global Search keeps your last few searches in this browser so it can offer them again. Nothing about a search reaches our servers. Turn the list off, or clear it, in Settings → Search.
  • Sign-in records: each time you sign in, we record the time, the sign-in method, your IP address and your browser, so we can spot and investigate misuse of an account. They are kept for as long as the account exists and are deleted with it.
  • Signed-in sessions: each device you sign in on keeps a session that records when it started and was last used, when it expires, and the IP address and browser it signed in from, so you stay signed in and misuse can be spotted. Settings → Profile lists your devices and signs any of them out.
  • Feedback you send: the title and text you write, the name and email you enter, the page you were on, and your browser, so we can reply and reproduce a problem. It is kept in our database and not sent to any other service.
  • Waitlist requests: if you join the waitlist for higher limits in Settings, we store the request, your name and email address, and the company name, phone number and message you add (all three are optional), so we can contact you about it. They are kept in our database and are not sent to any other service.
  • Request logs: like every website, our host records each request it serves: the time, the address asked for, the IP address and the browser. We use them to keep the site secure and to find faults.
  • Backups: before a change to the database we take a copy of it, kept with our host. A backup holds what the database held that day.

Cookies

CalcTrail sets no advertising or analytics cookies, and there is no cookie banner because there is nothing to ask consent for. The only cookies are the ones the site needs in order to work:

  • Sign-in session: when you sign in, our sign-in system sets a session cookie so you stay signed in. It is never set for guests and is removed when you sign out.
  • Sign-in hint: a cookie holding the single word "guest" or "session", so the app knows on its first paint whether to look for your account. It expires when you close the browser.

Smaller preferences — theme and layout, your recent searches, and your analytics choice — live in your browser's localStorage, which is never sent to us. If you visited before September 2026 you may still carry our old cookie-consent cookie; the app deletes it on your next visit.

Analytics (Ahrefs Web Analytics)

CalcTrail uses one analytics tool, Ahrefs Web Analytics, to see which pages and features are used so we can improve them. It runs for every visitor on calctrail.com, on the basis of our legitimate interest in understanding how the site is used, except a visit that starts from a share link: it is not loaded for that visit at all, so a link's private address never reaches it. It sets no cookies, writes nothing to your device, and assigns you no persistent identifier. It does not run on our development site.

How it counts visitors without cookies

Ahrefs counts unique visitors with a one-way hash of your IP address, browser, and a salt that changes every day. Your raw IP address is discarded and never stored, and the daily salt means the same visitor cannot be linked across days.

What it collects

  • Page views: which pages are visited, and roughly how many times
  • The page that referred you, your country and city, device type, browser, operating system, screen size, and language — the same information any web server sees
  • The events below, each with only the properties listed

What the events record

There are 20 of them, and each records only what is described here. The list is rendered from the same file the app uses to decide what may be sent, so it cannot drift from the code. The technical name of each event and the exact properties it carries are shown in Settings → Analytics, beside the switch that turns them off.

  • You pressed equals, or an operator, on one of the three keypad calculators (Basic, RPN, Scientific). Every other calculator recalculates as you type and has no equivalent moment.
  • A calculator tab was opened, closed or switched, and which calculator it held.
  • A history entry was saved, updated, deleted or restored, or a workspace's history was cleared.
  • A custom variable was created, updated, deleted, imported, or inserted into a calculator's field, and whether it was your first.
  • A workspace was created, switched or deleted.
  • A search ran, and whether it found anything. Never the search text.
  • You signed up, signed in or signed out.
  • Something went wrong, and in which part of the app. Never the message text.
  • A built-in example was loaded into a calculator (the example's own title, not your inputs).
  • A share link was created or copied: which kind of link, for which calculator and from which screen. Not the values in it.
  • A result or history was exported, in which format and from which screen.
  • The first time in a visit that you changed something in a particular calculator. Sent once per calculator per visit.
  • The panel inside a number field, with your variables and Open Tabs, was opened.
  • You opened the feedback window. Not what you wrote in it, and not whether you sent it.
  • A value from another open tab was inserted into a calculator's field through the field panel's Open Tabs tab: which calculator received it, which one it came from, and whether it was an input or a result.
  • A result was sent from one calculator into another's input through the copy button's Send to menu: which calculator received it, which one it came from, what kind of value it was (an amount, a rate, a term), whether it went to an open tab or opened a new one, and whether the receiving calculator had to switch mode to show it.
  • You opened the "Continue in another calculator" menu under a result, and which calculator it belongs to. Not your inputs, and not whether you then chose anything.
  • You chose a calculator in the "Continue in another calculator" menu: which calculator received your entries, which one they came from, and whether they went into a tab you had open or a new one. Not the entries themselves.
  • You switched a calculator to another mode with its row of mode buttons, for example from Simple to Refinance in the Loan Calculator: which calculator, and the name of the mode you picked. Not your inputs.
  • You used up one of your limits, or were stopped by one: which limit (open tabs, saved history, variables or workspaces), which of the two happened, and whether you were signed in. Not how many you had, and not what you were opening or saving.

What it never collects

  • Your name, email address, or anything about your account
  • The numbers you type or the results you get
  • Your workspace names, variable names, or search text
  • The address of a share link
  • Anything that could identify you across visits

Turning it off

Open Settings → Analytics and switch analytics off. Events stop immediately, and page views stop from your next page load. The choice is kept in your browser's localStorage. We also honour the Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track signals: if your browser sends either, analytics is off without you doing anything. Every feature works the same either way.

How We Use Your Information

Data Storage

Where your data is kept depends on whether you are signed in.

Guests: your workspaces, tabs, calculation history, variables, and settings are saved in your browser's own database (IndexedDB). None of it is sent to our servers. Smaller preferences — recent searches, your analytics choice, and interface settings — are kept in localStorage.

Signed-in users: the same data is stored in our database, encrypted in transit and at rest, and synced to every device you sign in on. Each device also keeps a local copy so your workspaces and history appear without waiting for the network — workspaces, tabs, and settings in localStorage, history and variables in IndexedDB. That copy is a cache the server always overwrites, and both parts are deleted when you sign out.

Search Query Storage

  • Everyone, signed in or not: your last few searches are stored in this browser's localStorage so the search window can offer them again. They stay on your device and are never sent to our servers. Clear them from Settings → Search, or by clearing this site's data in your browser — which also removes your saved workspaces and history.
  • Before September 2026: searches made while signed in were also stored with the account. We stopped storing them on 2 September 2026, and nothing ever read them back into the app. Records kept before that date can be deleted from Settings → Search, and are deleted with the account.
  • Control: switch the recent-searches list off at any time in Settings → Search. Search itself works exactly the same either way.

Data Sharing and Disclosure

We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to third parties. We may share data only in these limited circumstances:

  • Service Providers: With the services that run CalcTrail: the host that serves the site and stores the database, the analytics tool described above (Ahrefs Web Analytics), and the email provider that delivers sign-in and verification messages, which handles your email address for that purpose; and the email service that hosts our own inboxes, which holds the messages you send us
  • Legal Requirements: When required by law, court order, or government request
  • Business Transfers: In connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets (users will be notified)
  • Protection: To protect our rights, property, safety, or the safety of users and others

Third-Party Websites and Links

CalcTrail may link to external websites, products, or services — for example, from calculator content, guides, or reference material. When you follow one of these links:

  • You leave CalcTrail, and the third party's own privacy policy and cookies apply — we do not control how they collect or use data
  • We do not share your CalcTrail account data, calculation data, or search history with linked third parties
  • We recommend reviewing the privacy policy of any external site before providing it with personal information

Your Data Rights

You have the following rights regarding your personal data:

  • Access: Request a copy of your personal data
  • Correction: Request correction of inaccurate or incomplete data
  • Deletion: Delete your account and everything in it yourself, in Settings → Plan & Data → Danger Zone. If you cannot sign in, ask us by email and we will delete it for you
  • Export: Download a full JSON backup of your workspaces, history and variables from Settings → Plan & Data; any single calculation exports as JSON, CSV or PDF
  • Portability: Receive your data in a portable format
  • Objection: Object to certain processing activities
  • Withdraw consent: Turn analytics off in Settings → Analytics, and the recent-searches list off in Settings → Search, at any time
  • Nominate someone: Ask us to let a person you name exercise these rights on your behalf if you die or become unable to exercise them yourself

Send any of these to privacy@calctrail.com. To make sure a request is yours, we answer the email address on the account: send it from that address, or we write to it and act once you confirm. We answer as quickly as we can, and in any case within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with the outcome, say so and we will look at it again. If it is still not resolved, you can complain to the Data Protection Board of India once the Act's complaint procedure takes effect on 13 May 2027. The Act asks you to raise a complaint with us first, as described here.

Data Retention

We retain your data only as long as necessary to provide our services and comply with legal obligations:

  • Account Data: kept while your account exists. Reset all data (Settings → Plan & Data → Danger Zone) deletes your workspaces, tabs, history, variables and settings and keeps the account; as a guest, Reset this browser deletes everything CalcTrail keeps in your browser
  • Sign-in records: kept while the account exists and deleted with it
  • Signed-in sessions: signing out of a device deletes its session at once. A session you do not sign out of expires 30 days after you last used it, and is then kept for 13 months, for questions about the account's security, before it is deleted. All of them are deleted with the account
  • Waitlist requests: kept while the account exists. Reset all data leaves them in place, and deleting the account deletes them
  • Request logs: kept by our host for 30 days, then deleted
  • Backups: each backup is deleted when it is 90 days old. Something you delete leaves the live database at once, and leaves the backups as they age out
  • Feedback you send: kept until you ask us to delete it, or delete your account, which deletes it. It is not sent anywhere else
  • Expiring share links: a link stops working when it expires or is revoked. (A link that carries the calculation in its own address is not stored, so it has nothing to expire and cannot be revoked.) The stored snapshot, and the IP address kept with a link created without an account, are not yet deleted automatically after that; ask us and we will delete them. A signed-in account's links are deleted with the account
  • Analytics: aggregated page-view and event statistics are held by Ahrefs; nothing in them identifies you
  • Search Queries: none are stored on our servers. Records kept before September 2026 remain until you delete them from Settings → Search, or delete your account
  • Deleted Accounts: Deleting your account in Settings removes it at once from our database, with everything in it: workspaces, tabs, history, variables, settings, share links, sign-in records, waitlist requests and the feedback you sent. No copy is kept, apart from the database backups, which are deleted when they are 90 days old. Download a backup first if you want one. If you ask us by email instead, we delete it within 30 days. You can sign up again later with the same email; the new account starts empty

International Data Transfers

Your data may be processed and stored in countries other than the one you live in, because our hosting, email, and analytics providers operate internationally. For those transfers we rely on the data-processing terms and transfer safeguards each provider publishes, alongside applicable data protection law.

Your Rights Wherever You Live

CalcTrail is operated from India, where the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and the rules made under it govern personal data. Most of their duties take effect on 13 May 2027. Rather than list the other countries whose privacy laws we may or may not fall under, we offer the rights above to everyone: access, correction, deletion, export, objection, withdrawal of consent and nomination do not depend on where you live.

  • We do not sell or rent personal data, and we do not share it with advertisers.
  • There is nothing to consent to for tracking. Analytics sets no cookies, can be switched off in Settings, and is off already if your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal.
  • No one collects personal information about your activity over time and across other websites through CalcTrail. Ahrefs Web Analytics counts a visit with a hash that changes every day, although Ahrefs also uses the traffic it receives for its own products; Google learns of your visit only when you choose to sign in with Google; and a link to another website is an ordinary link, after which that site's own policy applies.
  • If you are in the EU, the UK, or California, the rights those laws are best known for — knowing what is held about you, getting a copy, correcting it, deleting it, and objecting to how it is used — are the ones listed above, and the same address handles them.

Children's Privacy

Accounts are for people aged 18 or older, and signing up asks you to confirm that you are. Anyone younger can use every calculator without an account. A guest's workspaces, history and settings stay in their own browser, and none of it is sent to us unless they create an expiring share link. A guest's visit still reaches our host, which receives the IP address with each request, as it does for every visitor, and analytics counts it unless analytics is switched off (see Analytics above). If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 18, we will delete it and everything in it.

Security Measures

We implement industry-standard security measures including:

  • Encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS)
  • Encryption at rest for stored data
  • Secure authentication and session management
  • Managed hosting, with infrastructure patching applied by the provider
  • Access controls and least-privilege principles

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, or legal requirements. When we make material changes, we will post the updated policy on this page, revise the "Last Updated" date at the top, and, for a change to what we collect or to your rights, say so on the Updates page as well. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
