CalcTrail User Guide

Beyond standard arithmetic, CalcTrail has specialized calculators for specific tasks. A few examples:

• Financial Calculators: Loan (with refinance breakeven analysis), Mortgage (with rent vs. buy comparison), Investment (with strategy comparison and risk analysis), Retirement, Savings (with goal-based planning), Debt-to-Income (DTI) Ratio, Credit Card Payoff, and Present Value calculators for comprehensive financial planning.
• Basic Calculator: Standard arithmetic with a tape you can work with — edit any line and it recomputes, tag and note lines for a searchable record, send the running total back to the display — plus receipt-style print and JSON/CSV/PDF export, desk-calculator percent (200 + 10% is 220), and memory keys (M+/M-/MR/MC).
• Scientific Calculator: Advanced mathematical functions including trigonometry (sin, cos, tan, inverses), logarithms (log, ln), exponentials (eˣ, 10ˣ), power and root functions (xʸ, √, x², x³, ∛, 1/x, |x|), factorial (!), hyperbolic functions (sinh, cosh, tanh, inverses), and a constants library (π, e, φ, c, h, NA). Degrees, radians or gradians, an EE key for scientific-notation entry, and a display format control — Fixed, Scientific or Engineering with a digits setting — for reporting results to a set number of figures, plus a searchable session history you can copy, reuse or save as a variable from.
• RPN Calculator: For engineers and scientists who prefer stack-based Reverse Polish Notation, similar to classic HP calculators — SWAP, ROLL, DROP and LAST X, named memory register profiles, operation replay, a searchable session history, degrees/radians/gradians for the trig keys, and Fixed, Scientific or Engineering precision modes.
• Unit Price Comparison: Find the best deal while shopping by comparing multiple items with different prices, quantities, and units.
• Health & Fitness: BMI (with reverse mode for target weight), Body Fat, Calorie (with macro visualization and calorie cycling), Pace, and Water Intake calculators to track your wellness goals.
• Unit Converter: Convert between units with a multi-unit view showing every unit in the category at once, one-click popular pairs, quick swap, and a decimals control for how precisely results are shown. Covers cooking measures (US and metric cups, spoons, sticks of butter, Gas Mark) and fuel economy (mpg US/UK, L/100km, km/L) alongside the usual length, weight, volume and data categories. You can also type a whole conversion on one line, such as "12 in to cm".
• Time Calculator: Add and subtract hours, minutes and seconds across as many rows as you need, or switch to Time Card mode to total shifts from clock-in and clock-out times with unpaid breaks — including overnight shifts — in both hours:minutes and payroll decimal hours.
• Time Zone Converter: Convert times with interactive time slider and world clock views for finding meeting times across zones.
• Date Difference: Calculate date differences with business days calculator (excluding weekends and holidays) and quick date presets.
• Academic Tools: GPA, Grade, and Weighted Mean calculators for students and educators.
• AI & Machine Learning: LLM Token Cost, AI ROI, Token Converter, and Speech Cost calculators for estimating what a model or API call will actually cost.
• Engineering: Ohm's Law, Wire Gauge, Resistor Color Code, Stress & Strain, Beam Deflection, Concrete Volume, Pipe Flow, and LC Circuit calculators.
• Marketing: ROAS, CPM, CPC, and CLV calculators for evaluating ad spend and customer value.
• Design & Creative: Aspect Ratio and Color Converter tools for designers and developers.

The history panel is a powerful tool for tracking your work within the currently active workspace.

• Saving: Click the Save icon inside a calculator or press Ctrl or ⌘ + S to save the current state and result.
• Restoring: Click "Restore" on any history item. If that calculator is already open in a tab, you'll be asked whether to replace it or open a new one; otherwise it opens directly in a new tab, clearly marked "Restored." Make changes to a restored tab and you'll get the option to save them back to that same history entry instead of only creating a new one.
• Tagging & Filtering: Add custom tags to history items for organization. You can then filter your history by clicking on the tags at the top of the panel.
• Import/Export: You can Export the current workspace's history to a JSON file for backup, or Import history from a structured CSV file using the buttons at the bottom of the history panel.

Custom variables allow you to store and reuse numbers across different calculators, saving you time and reducing errors.

• Creating Variables: Go to the "Variables" tab in the right-hand panel and click "Create". Each variable needs a unique name (e.g., tax_rate) and a numeric value.
• Global Variables: Variables are global to your profile, so they stay available across all workspaces.
• Using Variables: In any calculator input field that shows the variable icon (), you can click it to insert a variable's value.
• Importing Variables: You can bulk-import variables from a CSV file using the "Import" button in the Variables panel.

Global Search is a keyboard-first command bar. Search across tools, history, variables, and workspaces, and run system commands — all without leaving the keyboard.

• Find tools fast: Type any tool name, synonym, or keyword like loan, mortgage, bmi, or tip and press Enter to open it instantly.
• Search your data: Find saved history entries by title or content, look up custom variables by name, and switch between workspaces — all from the same search box.
• Commands: Type > to access system commands like >theme dark, >new variable, >shortcuts, or >settings.
• Scopes: >tools narrows the search to the full tool catalogue, and >tabs narrows it to the tabs you already have open. The active scope shows as a chip in the search box — remove it to search everything again.
• Inline variable creation: Type >var rate = 5 to create a custom variable on the fly without opening the variables modal.
• Context-aware empty state: Open Global Search without typing and you'll see recent history for your current tool, your most recent variables, and your most-used tools — ready to jump back into.
• Intelligent ranking: Results are scored by relevance with fuzzy matching enabled by default, then grouped by type (commands, open tabs, variables, history, workspaces, tools) for quick scanning.
• Search Tracking: Your recent searches stay on this device and appear as suggestions when you open the search box. Signed in, your search activity is also recorded in your account. You can turn this off, and clear what is stored, in Settings.

What you can export depends on whether you are signed in. As a guest, you can download your current session as a JSON file. When signed in, you can also export saved history to CSV and generate PDF reports on calculators that support them. Going the other way, you can import history entries and custom variables from a CSV file — handy for bringing in values you already keep in a spreadsheet.

• Animated Results: Result values animate smoothly whenever your inputs change, so you can follow a number as it updates instead of it just jumping.
• Comparison & What-If Tools: Side-by-side scenario comparisons, investment strategy analysis, refinance breakeven, and what-if sensitivity panels on supported calculators.
• Monte Carlo Simulation: The Investment and Retirement calculators include a Monte Carlo engine to model outcome variability under market uncertainty.
• Quick Start & Examples: Floating panels on supported calculators surface realistic example inputs so you can explore the calculator immediately.
• Performance: Debounced chart rendering and optimized computation keep the interface responsive even on complex multi-step calculations.
