CalcTrail User Guide

CalcTrail is more than just a set of calculators; it's a powerful, integrated environment designed to make your calculations fast, organized, and persistent. This guide will walk you through the key features to help you get the most out of the platform.

The CalcTrail interface is divided into three main sections:

• Sidebar (Left): Contains a list of all available calculators. Click any calculator to open it. You can pin your favorites by hovering and clicking the star icon. The sidebar can be collapsed for a more compact view.
• Main Area (Center): This is where your active calculator tabs are displayed. When no tabs are open, this area shows the Dashboard.
• Panel (Right): This panel contains your saved calculation history and custom variables. It can be toggled using the panel icon () in the header or the Ctrl or ⌘ + Shift + H shortcut.

Beyond standard arithmetic, CalcTrail offers a comprehensive collection of specialized calculators designed for specific tasks. Here are some notable examples:

• Financial Calculators: Loan (with refinance breakeven analysis), Mortgage (with rent vs. buy comparison), Investment (with strategy comparison and risk analysis), Retirement, Savings (with goal-based planning), Debt-to-Income (DTI) Ratio, Credit Card Payoff, and Present Value calculators for comprehensive financial planning.
• Basic Calculator: Standard arithmetic with tape mode for receipt-style history, print functionality, and memory functions (M+/M-/MR/MC).
• Scientific Calculator: Advanced mathematical functions including trigonometry (sin, cos, tan, inverses), logarithms (log, ln), exponentials (eˣ), power functions (xʸ, √), factorial (!), hyperbolic functions (sinh, cosh, tanh, inverses), and a constants library (π, e, φ, c, h, NA). Supports degrees/radians mode toggle and comprehensive error handling.
• RPN Calculator: For engineers and scientists who prefer stack-based Reverse Polish Notation calculations, similar to classic HP calculators.
• Unit Price Comparison: Find the best deal while shopping by comparing multiple items with different prices, quantities, and units.
• Health & Fitness: BMI (with reverse mode for target weight), Body Fat, Calorie (with macro visualization and calorie cycling), Pace, and Water Intake calculators to track your wellness goals.
• Unit Converter: Convert between units with multi-unit view showing all conversions at once, and quick swap functionality.
• Time Zone Converter: Convert times with interactive time slider and world clock views for finding meeting times across zones.
• Date Difference: Calculate date differences with business days calculator (excluding weekends and holidays) and quick date presets.
• Academic Tools: GPA, Grade, and Weighted Mean calculators for students and educators.
• Design & Creative: Aspect Ratio and Color Converter tools for designers and developers.

When you first open CalcTrail or close all your tabs, you're greeted by the Dashboard. It's your command center, designed to give you quick access to your most important tools and information.

• Quick Calculators: Small, fast widgets for common tasks. You can choose which ones appear on your dashboard from the Settings page.
• Pinned & Frequent Calculators: Your favorite (pinned) calculators and most frequently used tools are shown here for one-click access.
• Recent History: A snapshot of your most recent saved calculations within the current workspace. Click any entry to restore it.

Workspaces allow you to organize your work into separate contexts. Each workspace has its own independent history, keeping your projects cleanly separated (e.g., "Work Projects", "Personal Finance").

• Switching: Use the dropdown in the header area to switch between workspaces.
• Managing: Click the "Manage Workspaces" button to open a modal where you can create, edit, and delete workspaces.

The history panel is a powerful tool for tracking your work within the currently active workspace.

• Saving: Click the Save icon inside a calculator or press Ctrl or ⌘ + S to save the current state and result.
• Restoring: Click "Restore" on any history item. You can configure whether this opens in a new tab or replaces the current one in Settings.
• Tagging & Filtering: Add custom tags to history items for organization. You can then filter your history by clicking on the tags at the top of the panel.
• Import/Export: You can Export the current workspace's history to a JSON file for backup, or Import history from a structured CSV file using the buttons at the bottom of the history panel.

Custom variables allow you to store and reuse numbers across different calculators, saving you time and reducing errors.

• Creating Variables: Go to the "Variables" tab in the right-hand panel and click "Create". Each variable needs a unique name (e.g., tax_rate) and a numeric value.
• Global Variables: Variables are global to your profile, so they stay available across all workspaces.
• Using Variables: In any calculator input field that shows the variable icon (), you can click it to insert a variable's value.
• Importing Variables: You can bulk-import variables from a CSV file using the "Import" button in the Variables panel.

The Global Search is your superpower for navigating CalcTrail. It features advanced semantic search that understands natural language and can perform calculations directly.

• Natural Language Search: Ask questions in plain English like how much will I save, what is my monthly payment for a loan, or calculate my BMI. The search understands your intent and routes you to the right calculator.
• Question Answering: Get direct answers to common questions like what is 20% of 100, how many days between dates, or how old am I.
• Smart Jump: Type what you want to calculate, e.g., loan 50k or bmi 70kg 180cm to open the relevant calculator with values pre-filled.
• Unit & Currency Conversion: Type conversions like 10 kg to lbs or 100 USD to EUR to quickly open the appropriate converter with values pre-filled.
• Inline Math: Type simple math expressions like 50 * 5 or (500 * 1.05) / 12 to see the result. You can copy it or Open in Basic Calculator with the expression pre-filled.
• Commands: Type > to access system commands like >theme dark, >new variable, or >shortcuts.
• Search Everything: Search across Calculators, History, Workspaces, and Variables simultaneously with intelligent ranking.
• Search Tracking: Your search queries are stored locally (for guest users) or in your account (for logged-in users) to improve search suggestions and personalize your experience. You can disable this in Settings.

CalcTrail is designed to be fully navigable via keyboard. Press ? at any time to see the full list of shortcuts. Essentials: Tab Management (Ctrl or ⌘ + 1-9, Ctrl or ⌘ + Tab, Esc), State Management (Ctrl or ⌘S, Ctrl or ⌘Z, Ctrl or ⌘R), and Calculator Input (number pad, Enter to solve).

CalcTrail offers flexible sign-in options: Email & Password (with email verification), Google Sign-In (automatic email verification, optional password later), Password Management from profile settings, and the same security features for all accounts.

Guest Users: 2 workspaces, 50 history entries per workspace, 10 global variables. Free Plan (Logged In): 5 workspaces, 100 history entries per workspace, 100 global variables. All features are available within your plan limits.

Open the Settings page from the sidebar. Configure Appearance (Theme, Font Size, Compact Mode), Dashboard Widgets, Data Management (Backup/Restore), Plan & Storage, and Account Management.

Export behavior follows account context: guests can export current-session JSON, while signed-in users can export JSON/CSV/PDF on supported saved-history contexts. Import from CSV is available on supported workflows, including history and variable operations.

Each calculator includes a "Related Calculators" section. Suggestions are context-aware. Click any related calculator to open it instantly.

Comparison tools, what-if analysis, progress tracking, Monte Carlo simulation (Retirement), floating Quick Start and Examples, and optimized performance with debounced charts.
