Fuel Cost Calculator | Gas Cost for Any Trip or Commute
Calculate how much gas a trip will cost based on distance, MPG, and fuel price
Estimate monthly commute costs, compare vehicles by fuel efficiency, and...
When Should You Use This Calculator?
- Estimating trip fuel costs based on distance and efficiency
- Using Trip Planning mode for round-trip and extra-charge budgeting
- Comparing vehicle efficiency or price scenarios in Compare mode
- Tracking fuel cost calculations over time with persistent history
- Planning road trips and commute budgets with monthly estimates
How to Use This Calculator
- Choose mode: Simple, Trip Planning, or Compare.
- Enter trip distance, vehicle fuel efficiency, and fuel price.
- Select metric or imperial units to match your region.
- In Trip Planning, add round-trip, tolls, and parking for a full trip cost.
- Review fuel needed, total cost, and cost per person.
Key Features:
- Three modes: Simple estimate, Trip Planning, and Compare scenarios
- Metric and imperial support with fuel-needed and split-cost outputs
- Trip Planning adds round-trip, extras, and monthly estimate controls
- Compare mode contrasts alternate efficiency/fuel-price outcomes
Formula
Fuel Cost = (Distance ÷ Fuel Efficiency) × Price per Unit
- In imperial units: Cost = (Miles ÷ MPG) × Price per Gallon.
- In metric units: Cost = (km ÷ 100) × (L/100km) × Price per Litre.
- Trip Planning mode adds round-trip, tolls, and monthly multipliers.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate the fuel cost for a trip?
Enter the total distance, your vehicle's fuel efficiency (MPG or L/100km), and the current fuel price. The calculator estimates total fuel cost as: Cost = (Distance / MPG) × Price per Gallon.
Can I include tolls and extra costs in the trip estimate?
Yes. Open the "Trip Extras" section to add a round-trip toggle, tolls, parking fees, other costs, and a trips-per-month estimate. Open "Compare Vehicle" separately to see the cost difference against an alternate efficiency/price scenario. Both sections are optional and independent of each other.
How much does MPG (fuel efficiency) affect trip cost?
Fuel cost is inversely proportional to MPG. Going from 20 MPG to 30 MPG cuts fuel cost by 33% for the same trip. On a 300-mile trip at $3.50/gallon: 20 MPG costs $52.50 vs. 30 MPG costs $35. Open the "Compare Vehicle" section to see the savings from a more efficient vehicle side by side.
How do I calculate my monthly commute fuel cost?
Enter your one-way commute distance, MPG, and fuel price, then open "Trip Extras" and set "Trips per Month" to the number of one-way (or round-trip, if you enable that toggle) drives you make in a month. The calculator multiplies your per-trip cost by that count to estimate monthly fuel spend.
How do I convert between MPG and L/100km?
The two are inversely related: L/100km = 235.21 ÷ MPG. So 30 MPG is about 7.84 L/100km, and 40 MPG is about 5.88 L/100km. The units toggle only changes which unit your existing efficiency/distance/price numbers are interpreted as — it does not convert the values for you, so re-enter them in the new unit after switching.
Can I export my Fuel Cost Calculator calculations?
Yes. In guest mode you can export your calculations to JSON. Signing in adds PDF and CSV export. Click the export button to download your results — useful for record-keeping, sharing, or importing into other tools.
Does this calculator save my history?
Yes. Your calculation history is saved automatically. As a guest you can keep up to 50 calculations per workspace on your device. Sign in for free to keep up to 100 per workspace and access them from any device.
Is this calculator free to use?
Yes. The Fuel Cost Calculator is free to use with no sign-up required. A free account adds more calculation history, multiple workspaces, and access to your saved data from any device.
