Understanding Age Calculation

Why age is not just a date subtraction

Subtracting years alone ignores whether the birthday has happened yet this year, and subtracting raw days ignores that months and years have different lengths. This calculator counts whole years, then whole months within the current year, then the remaining days — accounting for leap years and each month's actual length — so the years/months/days figure always matches what you'd state on an official form.

Calculating age on a specific date

Switch to Date Check mode to find someone's age as of any past or future date — useful for verifying eligibility on a historical form, confirming age at a specific event, or planning ahead for an age-based milestone or deadline.

Reading the day-count breakdown

Total weeks, days, hours, minutes, and seconds all describe the exact same span of time as the years/months/days figure — just in different units. They're useful for milestone tracking (like a 10,000-day or 25,000-day birthday) or anywhere a precise elapsed-time figure is more useful than a calendar age.

Yes. Switch to Date Check mode and set "Calculate Age As Of" to any future date to see how old you will be at that point. This is useful for calculating retirement age, legal milestones, or future anniversaries.
The calculator is very accurate, accounting for leap years (including century leap years), varying month lengths (28-31 days), and the exact number of days between dates. It gives you a precise age breakdown.
This calculator uses the Gregorian calendar by default. Age is computed by counting full years, then full months, then remaining days since the last birthday. Leap years are handled automatically — a person born on Feb 29 has their birthday counted on Feb 28 in non-leap years.
Leap-day birthdays are handled, and it is worth knowing which convention is used: in a year without a February 29, this calculator treats March 1 as the birthday. So someone born on 29 February 2000 turns 25 on 1 March 2025, and is still 24 on 28 February. Some countries use February 28 instead for legal purposes, so check your local rule if the date matters officially. In leap years the birthday falls on February 29 exactly.
Yes. Enter any date of birth to calculate that person's age. The calculator works for any date in the past. You can use it to calculate ages of family members, friends, or historical figures.
