Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between markup and margin?
Markup is the percentage added to cost to reach the selling price (based on cost). Margin is the percentage of the selling price that is profit (based on revenue). A 50% markup equals a 33.3% margin. These are often confused but are not interchangeable.
How do I calculate selling price from cost and desired margin?
Formula: Selling Price = Cost / (1 - Margin%). For example, if cost is $100 and you want a 25% margin: $100 / (1 - 0.25) = $133.33. Enter cost and target margin in this calculator to get the selling price instantly.
How do ecommerce platform fees affect my net margin?
Platform fees (Amazon FBA, Shopify, Etsy, payment processing, etc.) are subtracted from revenue before profit. A product with a 30% gross margin but a 15% platform fee leaves only 15% net. Turn on the E-commerce Fee Deduction toggle in this calculator to include a percentage fee plus any fixed per-order fee and see your true net profit after marketplace deductions.
What is a good profit margin?
There's no single good margin — it varies enormously by industry, from single digits for general retail and grocery to 60%+ for software and luxury goods, and public-company benchmarks (like the NYU Stern margin-by-industry data) don't always reflect small-business economics. Compare your margin against your own historical numbers and your specific industry rather than a generic target, and make sure it's high enough to cover the fixed costs and fees this calculator doesn't include.
